SNL offers three forms of independent study.
1) Faculty Designed Independent Studies (FDIS) are mini-courses designed by SNL faculty for independent study. You must be registered for or have completed LL 250 Foundations of Adult Learning to register for an FDIS. Each FDIS satisfies one competence, unless noted, and is worth two tuition hours. To register, find the 5 digit registration number in the quarterly registration materials. Then register using Campus Connect, and contact the instructor to begin.

2) Guided Independent Studies (GIS) are independent study options customized by SNL faculty to satisfy a competence. Discuss these with your Faculty Mentor. Each GIS satisfies one competence and is worth two tuition hours. To register, download, complete and submit a paper registration form noting it is for a GIS and the competence, your student information, your faculty mentor's name, and your instructor's name. (Microsoft Word required).
3) Independent Learning Pursuits (ILP) refer to college-level learning through community and work projects, non-credit courses, training, seminars and life experiences. An ILP is not a course. It does not carry tuition hours and does not count against credit hours to receive financial aid. It requires a non-refundable assessment fee. See Chapter 7 of the Foundations of Adult Learning Resource Book for instructions on how to submit an ILP.
